The Washington football team continued its march toward the postseason by winning its third straight game by topping Coastal Conference foe South Central 40-14.
“We needed a win tonight and the guys came out and played hard,” Washington coach Sport Sawyer said. “We needed to improve our seeding for the playoffs and the guys played well tonight.”
Sophomore running back Markell Spencer fought off a gimpy ankle to rush for 143 yards and score three touchdowns to lead the attack.
Senior quarterback Jimmy Williams turned in another strong performance as he rushed for a team-high 148 yards and a score, while throwing a 12-yard TD pass to Stevie Green. Trey Spruill, who returned to action from a concussion, scored on a 25-yard run for the Pam Pack.
“Markell’s downhill speed is pretty good,” Sawyer said of his young back. “If he gets a crease he’s able to make things happen.”
The Washington defense’s play was equal to the offense as it clamped down on the Falcons in the second half and finished the contest with a season-high three interceptions.
“Defensively tonight, Devonte Corprew had an interception, D.J. Bell had one and so did Jacquez Columbus,” Sawyer said. “And the defensive line had a good night, they weren’t able to run the ball. Our defense did very well tonight.”
