Mr. Johnnie Edward Smith, age 55, a resident of 2625 Horse Pen Swamp Road, Washington, died Thursday, January 3, 2013, at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville.
Graveside services will be 3:00 PM Sunday, January 6, 2013, at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, conducted by the Rev. Clifford Ball.
Mr. Smith was born in Beaufort County on February 4, 1957. He was the son of the late John Lewis Smith and Doris Virginia Gurganus Smith. Mr. Smith was a well driller for Joe and Bennie Leggett as long as his health permitted. He was a member of the Piney Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church.  “He loved life and loved living it.”
He is survived by a sister, Debbie S. Kirk and her husband, Oral of Washington; three brothers, Frankie Ray Smith and wife, Diane, Randy Wayne Smith and wife, Patricia, Danny Lewis Smith and wife, Patty, all of Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a sister, Lora May Smith; his paternal grandparents, Arthur and Annie Smith; and maternal grandparents, William and Allie Rawls Gurganus.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM Saturday, January 5, 2013, at Paul Funeral Home and Crematory of Washington and other times at the home of his sister, Debbie Kirk, 2623 Horse Pen Swamp Road, Washington.
