The Dream Keepers gala slated for Jan. 25 has been postponed.
The Beaufort County Boys & Girls Club event to honor local heroes nominated by the public and vetted by the club’s board will be rescheduled to sometime in the spring, according to Malveata Collins, chief professional officer for the Boys & Girls Club.
“We just did not have enough time to present it as we wanted to,” Collins explained.
The gala is to be the culmination of the club’s Dream Keepers fundraising campaign, which is an open invitation to the public to honor personal heroes — those who have helped build their dreams and keep them alive — by making a donation to the club in that person’s name. The names of all submitted Dream Keepers will become part of a mural designed by artist Tanya Parker for the Boys & Girls Club.
Collins said the response from the community has been encouraging.
“We’ve had some people come in and drop off donations,” Collins said. “We’re definitely in need of much more, but we’re grateful for those who have come in.”
The Boys & Girls Club has faced cuts in funding in the wake of a sluggish economy, forcing club officials to cut back in staff and some programming. The club offers after-school activities and tutoring, as well as summer programs, at its two facilities in Washington and Belhaven.
