Ruth Hughes Matthews, 78, of 431 Farless Road, Merry Hill, died Monday, June 24, 2013, at Three Rivers Nursing Home. She was born Jan. 4, 1935, in Bertie County to the late Lellie McCoy and Marie Dunlow Hughes and was predeceased by her husband, James Norfleet Matthews. Ruth was a member of Riverside Baptist Church.  She retired from Seabrook Peanut Company and was known for her homemade biscuits.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 27, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Riverside Baptist Church by Rev. Randy Hughes. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her sons, Alan Matthews and wife Sheri of Chocowinity and John Matthews and wife Heather of Merry Hill; a sister, Jeanie Rollert of Longview, Texas; brothers, Carlton Hughes and Frankie Hughes both of Merry Hill and Leon Hughes of Williamston; grandchildren, Luke and Gabe Matthews and Sidney Wilkerson.  

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 26, 2013, from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor. Memorial gifts may be made to Riverside Baptist Church, 1206 N.C. Highway 45 North, Merry Hill, NC 27957.
