Mr. Ernest Sherwood Carter, Jr., age 83, a resident of 107 Connecticut Drive, Chocowinity, NC died Monday morning July 15, 2013 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.
A funeral service will be held 7:00 PM on Wednesday July 17, 2013 at Union Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Chocowinity, NC officiated by Rev. Brent Patrick. A graveside service will follow at 11:00 AM on Thursday July 18, 2013 at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens in Raleigh, NC.
Mr. Carter was born on June 11, 1930, son of the late Ernest Sherwood Carter, Sr. and Elizabeth Cross Carter. On October 30, 1949, he married the former Edna King who survives. He owned and operated Carter’s Seafood for over 30 years. He enjoyed playing tennis, fishing and gardening. He collected antiques and loved going to car shows. Prior to relocating to the area, he had been a member and actively involved at Shady Grove FWB Church in Durham for 30 years. Mr. Carter lived in the local area for the past ten years and was a member of Union Chapel FWB Church.
In addition to his wife, Edna Carter of the home, he is survived by his daughter: Laurie C. Horne and her husband Henry of Washington; two grandchildren: Lauren Kimbrell and husband Stephen of New Bern and Joshua Horne and wife Juliana of La Grange and two great grandchildren: Lily Kate and Ainsley Kimbrell. A great grandson, Carter, is to be born in October and will be Mr. Carter’s namesake. He is also survived by two sisters: Doris Milton of Four Oaks and Dudley Coats of Durham. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother: Tommy Carter.
The family will receive friends 5:30-6:45 PM on Wednesday, prior to the service, at Union Chapel FWB Church and other times at the home of his daughter, Laurie and Henry Horne, 124 Bath Circle Washington, NC.
