Area Church Plans Afterschool Program

Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church is opening an after school program in the fall of this year.
A program at Tyrrell Elementary School closed last year and church members wanted to start another one.
“We feel that there is a great need for this kind of program among the young families of our community and their children. Our program will be located at Wesley Memorial, but will run separately from the business of the church,” said Trudee Farley, a member of the church’s organizing committee.
The church’s program schedule will mirror the school calendar. The daily plan is to engage the children in some enrichment activities such as games, song, or chants, with physical movements while they arrive, followed by drinks and snacks. Then, there will be a homework time in age appropriate groups. After finishing, the children will be guided in other enrichment activities in age groups or all together as time allows.
“We are also developing plans for trips to the library and downtown Columbia and presentations from community members about our community and possibilities for the students’ future,” said Farley.
The church’s program is designed to be self-sustaining, but they need some help to get started.
“We are now raising funds to cover our initial start-up costs. The funds will cover snacks and drinks; cabinets and a refrigerator; shelves and school supplies; computer, software and printer; art supplies for school and our own projects and crafts; educational enrichment supplies such as worksheets for specific skills, games (board and physical) and CD’s for songs and movement,” reads a concluding portion of a letter to the community from the church’s leaders regarding the program.
The church’s letter to the community ends by noting that they are planning fundraisers in the form of lunch and dinner at the church, but they need the help of the community to get started.
Any amount you can donate would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to donate a specific item, the church would like you to contact us about our list of needs to avoid duplications.
The church has a planned fundraiser scheduled for July 25 from 11-2 pm and 4-7 pm. The program starts August 26.
