Mr. Donald Gray Smith, age 75, a resident of 1675 Old Bath Hwy., Washington, died Sunday, August 11, 2013 at his home.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Asbury United Methodist Church and will be conducted by Rev. Sam Grist, III and Rev. Jim Reed. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Randy Smith, Mike Smith, Dwayne Asby, Ashley Alligood, Johnny Mac Farmer, Jr. and James D. Asby, Jr. will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Smith was born in Beaufort County on March 10, 1938 to the late Wilbur Odell Smith and Gladys Belle Lewis Smith. On June 25, 1967 he married Ellen Christine Asby who preceded him in death on August 21, 2011. He was a 1956 graduate of Old Farm Life School in Vanceboro, retired from EI Dupont in Kinston after 32 years of service, was a Captain with the River Rovers of Washington and was a volunteer carpenter and maintenance worker for the N.C. Estuarium in Washington. Mr. Smith was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, actively serving in many ways throughout the years.
Survivors include one son, Chuck Smith and wife Susan of Rocky Mount, two grandsons, Nigel Gray Smith, Trevor Wayne Smith both of Rocky Mount, two brothers, Ronald Ray Smith and wife Pattie of Cove City, Bobby Lee Smith and wife Jean of Vanceboro, two sisters, Lois Fornes and Betty Barr both of Vanceboro. He was preceded in death by one son, Roderick Gray Smith and two sisters, Geraldine Carrow and Elitha Jenkins.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm Monday, August 12, 2013 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at the home.
