Mr. Edward Alexander Davenport, 97, of 513 Madison Street Plymouth died Tuesday December 24, 2013 at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville.

Funeral services will be 1:00PM Sunday December 29, 2013 at First Zion Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Wayne Welch officiating. Burial will follow in First Zion Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Davenport was born June 2, 1916 in Washington County. He was the son of the late Andrew Davenport and Emma Jane Garrett. He was a member of First Zion Grove Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Church Clerk and Adult Sunday School Teacher. Mr. Davenport was known locally as “The Peanut Man”. For many years you could see him at the local Piggly Wiggly selling his peanuts and the local newspaper, The Roanoke Beacon.

Surviving him are daughters: Verna Turner- Jersey City, NJ., Catherine Bond- Plymouth, NC., Iris Johnson- Columbus, GA., and Emma Moore- Plymouth, NC.; twelve grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and nine great great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 6:00PM to 8:00PM Saturday December 28, 2013 at Toodle’s Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter Mrs. Emma Moore 309 Hampton Drive, Plymouth.
