Charlie Ray Davenport, Sr., age 84, a resident of Hwy 92 E., Washington, NC passed away Monday, January 6, 2014 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital. There will be a celebration of his life at 11:00 AM, Thursday, January 9, 2014 in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service, officiated by Evangelist Leroy K. “Skip” Hurley. Special music will be provided by Julian Cutler. Burial will follow at Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Wes Davenport, Al Davenport, Robert Cutler, Keith Taylor, Sammy Robbins, Keith Woolard, Johnnie Martin and Dwight Davenport will serve as pallbearers. Joey Taylor, Mike Davenport, George Sullivan and Floyd Sutton, Jr. will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends today from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Hwy 264 E, Washington, NC and other times at the home.

 

Mr. Davenport was born October 9, 1929 in Beaufort County, son of the late Wesley and Lillian Woolard Davenport. On July 21, 1951 he married the former Iris Cutler. He retired from National Spinning. Mr. Davenport was a member of Woodard’s Pond Church of Christ and was a charter member of Goose Creek Hunting Club He enjoyed gardening; especially, collards. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

 

In addition to his wife, Mr. Davenport is survived by his son, Charlie Ray Davenport, Jr. and wife Anne of Washington; his daughters, Ellen D. Holliday and husband Danny of Jamesville and Grace D. Kennedy of New Bern; his sister, LaDonna Younger of Bath; his grandchildren, Brandon, Chad, Andrew and Erin; his great grandchildren, Olivia and Eden; his step grandchildren, Tracey and Lisa; and his step great grandchild, Lauren.

 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Edna D. Robbins and Wanda D. Taylor; and his brother, Alton C. Davenport.

 

Memorials may be made in Mr. Davenport’s memory to Woodard’s Pond Church of Christ Building Fund, 9004 US Hwy 264 E, Washington, NC 27889.
