SINGING OUT: The ECU gospel choir and many other performers are slated for the Turnage Theater stage Saturday evening “An Evening with Dr. Thomas L. Walker: A Gospel Concert and More…”, a partnership between 104.5 FM The Vine Connection and the Beaufort County Arts Council.

The Turnage Theater in downtown Washington will open its doors Saturday to those in search of a little gospel — gospel music, that is.

Local radio station 104.5 FM WSTK, The Vine Connection’s Mae Rodgers, in partnership with the Beaufort County Arts Council, will host “A Gospel Concert and More” starting at 5 p.m. The Vine Connection, located in Washington, broadcasts gospel and ministry over the eastern North Carolina airwaves.

East Carolina University’s award-winning gospel choir, Deacon Raymond Harrell & The Hassells Gospel Singers, 4 Real and gospel R & B singer Clyde Felton will share the stage with “Johnny” Smith’s one-woman play, a fashion show put on by area churches, and the headliner for the event, Dr. Thomas L. Walker and his gospel band, Totally Committed.

Walker serves as pastor of the 1,000-seat Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, but is well known on the gospel circuits for his traditional gospel, including a standout recording of “One Day at a Time.”

“It’s one of two programs we have this month that we are calling part of our celebration of black history month,” said Joey Toler, executive director of the arts council. “Really, what you see on the poster and the flyer, there will be a lot of guests and surprises. There are going to be skits, sing-alongs, short plays, dancers, fashion — it’s quite the variety show. We’re really excited about it.”

Advance tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for children age 12 and under. Tickets at the door at $15. Tickets are available at the Beaufort County Arts Council box office at the Turnage Theater, 150 W. Main St., and at 104.5 FM WSTK The Vine Connection, 408 N. Market St., Washington.
