Karen Gaddy Hackney died Tuesday, February 25, 2014 after an extended illness. Karen is survived by her husband, James Van Dis and her three Vizslas; Morgan, Bailey, and Candi, and her horse Dilbert. In addition, she is survived by her parents, Keith and Claudia Hackney, her sister Katherine Hackney, and her in-laws, Don and Maude Van Dis.

Karen lived life to the fullest and truly enjoyed the company of her many friends.  Her family would like to express their appreciation for the generous love and support of her relatives, many friends, her State and NCDENR coworkers, and her healthcare providers.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, February 28, 2014 at the house of her parents, Keith and Claudia, at 354 Summerhaven Lane, Washington, NC. Family and friends are welcome at other times at the same address. A memorial service for Karen will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Karen requested that donations be made to the United States Equine Rescue League, Inc. (1851 W.
