With three canceled games and just a few on-field practices under their elastic belts, the Terra Ceia baseball team took care of business against TEACH in the season opener on Friday, 13-2.

Knights’ sophomore and dual-sport athlete Chase Furlough got the call, and despite a low-velocity fastball and minor control problems, he held the Trailblazers to two runs on four hits and five walks.

After Al Morris led the game off with a single to right field, Furlough locked in and struck out the next three Trailblazers. When the Knights stepped to the plate for the first time this season, they would erupt with an offensive barrage of six hits and four walks. Austin Roscoe notched the first hit of the season with a booming double, plating the first run of the game. The Knights would go on to record 10 more runs in the first inning, putting the game virtually out of reach.

“I was pretty pleased with us coming out in the first inning and putting the bat on the ball,” said Terra Ceia head coach Jason Wynne. “We’ve been concentrating on hitting, so it was good to see that translate onto the field.”

A single by Christian Heath, two walks and a sacrifice fly put the Trailblazers in the board with a run in the second, but Terra Ceia answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of its own.

The Knights’ offense was muffled over the final two innings, as starting pitcher Brian Warren finally settled down and found his rhythm.

In the fourth inning, Furlough was relieved by freshman Tyler Hendrix after giving up the final run of the ballgame. Hendrix walked two batters, but kept the Trailblazers from crossing home plate and got the final four outs. He struck out two.

“Chase is going to be an integral part of our pitching staff,” Wynne said. “He’s not our number one starter, but he was our number one starter today. I thought it was a good outing for our first time out on the field.”

On Monday, Terra Ceia will opening up conference play with a home game against Ridgecroft.
