CPS after school daycare serves students, parents

CHOCOWINITY — The school day doesn’t end at 3 p.m. on the campus of Chocowinity Primary School.
Instead, some students who are enrolled in the after school day care program stick around as late as 6 p.m.
But the program is much more than just a baby sitting service, according to director Kathy Sullivan.
“They get help with their homework, and on nice days we have special outdoor activities, like teaching them kickball,” Sullivan said. “They are served refreshments, and on rainy days we might do puzzles or watch a movie. And Friday is our Fun Day.”
Fun Day may include a lesson in following written directions while making and flying paper airplanes. Special educational and entertaining programs are planned, and Sullivan noted that she welcomes people interested in sharing their time and talents.

CPS’s after school daycare program is a welcome addition to the school day for parents.
“This program gives the parents an opportunity to have their children come right on here without having to take a school bus to another daycare center,” Sullivan pointed out.
Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis and there is often a waiting list early in the school year. The program averages 35 students.
Sullivan, a former teacher assistant at CPS, took over as daycare director earlier this year. Assisting her is Agnes Worsley, who has been involved in the program for 12 years. Sullivan succeeded Janice Boyd, who directed the program for over a decade after retiring following a long public schools career at CPS as secretary and assistant to the principal.
“The most rewarding thing we do is help the students with their homework and watch them grow,” Sullivan said. “And we like being a help to the parents.”
The students enrolled in the program recognize its benefits.
“It helps me so I can get time to read and do my homework so my mom won’t have to worry about it,” said Haley Popperwill, a fourth grade student at Chocowinity Primary School.
