CHOCOWINITY — A second grade student at Chocowinity Primary School couldn’t be more excited about the school’s recent Career Fair.
“This is the best day of my life,” said Lucy Harper. “I can’t decide if I want to be a nurse or a veterinarian!”
Lucy’s enthusiasm was contagious as she and other CPS students visited the fair, which featured five different stations manned by individuals from the community speaking about their varied jobs.
“They volunteered their time, their knowledge and their resources,” said Leslie Jones, who coordinated the event. Also on the planning committee were CPS staff members Alicia Vosburgh, Rondi Godley, Candice Strickland and Paige Hill.
The school’s guest speakers for the day included Denise Hodges, representing the field of nursing; Carol Kelly and Scott Bowden of the Tar River Animal Hospital; Bryan Lilley, a firefighter/paramedic; Scott Dail, a video games technician; and Kevin Whitaker and Andy Judy of the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Each student from kindergarten through fourth grade had the chance to learn more about each exciting and diverse career opportunity represented during the fair, according to Jones.
“The guest speakers were asked to prepare a 10-minute presentation that was both informative and engaging,” Jones said. “They were asked to bring visual and hands-on items, with the latter including a pair of baby goats.”
TO show their appreciation to the guests, the school provided breakfast items and the CPS Parent-Teacher Organization catered lunch.
