BELHAVEN — Investigators seized a stash of drugs and the tools used to grow marijuana after they served warrants on an alleged drug dealer in Belhaven.

On Wednesday night, investigators arrested Carlos Jayshawn Rome, 39, of Railroad Street, on two active warrants for the sale of marijuana, but it was the discovery of more drugs in Rome’s home that led to more serious charges, according to a press release from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office drug unit.

In addition to $4,005 in cash, investigators found 97 grams of marijuana, 25 grams of crack cocaine, 45 grams of powder cocaine and a closet off a bedroom full of equipment used to grow marijuana, said a spokesman for the unit. A bathroom was also rigged as a drying room, with a tube hooked to the bathroom exhaust port to air out the pungent smell of the marijuana, according to the drug unit’s Capt. Russell Davenport. Davenport said the equipment alone was worth between $2,000 and $3,000, while the street value of the drugs came roughly $9,000.

Investigators said it was complaints from people who suspected Rome was dealing drugs that brought him to their attention, leading them to make two controlled buys of marijuana from him. After investigators witnessed what they term “short duration, high volume traffic” at Rome’s residence and stopped a car leaving, the driver of the vehicle admitted to buying drugs from Rome, the release said.

Davenport said the drug unit’s ability to make controlled buys of drugs from suspected dealers is invaluable to their efforts to get drugs off the streets.

“It’s a weapon of ours,” Davenport said of the money reserved for that specific use. “It’s a tool to fight crime with.”

Rome was charged with three counts of possession with intent to sell marijuana, manufacturing marijuana, cocaine trafficking, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a dwelling to keep and sell controlled substances. He was detained at the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $100,000 bond, and having paid the bond was released the same night, according to investigators.
