Evelyn Maxine Wheeler Wise, 74, of Swan Quarter, died Monday August 25, 2014 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital, Washington.
Born January 22, 1940 in Hyde County, she was the daughter of the late William and Rosa Snoddy Wheeler. She was married to Robert G. “Bobby” Wise, who survives.
She was a member of the Swan Quarter Baptist Church.
Evelyn and Bobby celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary, August 10, 2014 and spent many years traveling due to his career in the Coast Guard, no matter the duty station she always made a home for her family. She reared two children and later a grandson and helped take care of her great grandson Quinten who adored her. No matter who came to her door they were welcome, if they were hungry she fed them and if they needed shelter she gave it readily.
She has been Nana to her family and every young person that came thru her doors, treating all as family. She worked with the Hyde County School System as a Librarian at the Davis Elementary School in Engelhard, NC, as an avid book reader this was the perfect job for her. Many years she helped students by sharing her joy of reading.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Swan Quarter Baptist Church. Pastor Mike Wheeler will officiate.
In addition to her husband surviving is a daughter, Celeste W. Brooks of Ocracoke; two grandchildren Gregory Wise and Tabitha Brooks; two great grandchildren Quinten Brooks and Shayna Brooks; two brothers, Buddy Wheeler and wife Linda of Manteo, Bill and wife Clarkie of Manteo; four sisters, Dorothy W. Cahoon of Manteo, Joyce W. Carawan and husband Sherlin of Swan Quarter, Marjorie W. Alexander of Grants Pass, Oregon and Marian W. Carawan of Swan Quarter.
She was preceded in death by a son Phillip Craig Wise; a brother Joseph Aubrey Wheeler; three sisters Doris W. Jernigan, Jean W. O’Neal and Mae W. Lupton.
The family will receive friends on Thursday at Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter, between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
