CURNIE HOPKINS

Nov. 7, 1929 – Sept. 28, 2014

 

“Captain” Curnie Hopkins, 84, of Brunswick, Georgia died September 28, 2014 at Hospice of the Golden Isles surrounded by family and friends following a brave battle against cancer.  Curnie was born November 7, 1929, one of ten children born to the late William Jasper and Hattie Fulford Hopkins of Pamlico Beach, NC.

He is survived by his wife, Elwanda Johnson Hopkins of the home, a son Lee (Ruby) Hopkins of Belhaven, North Carolina, a daughter Belinda (Dick) Garner of Mocksville, North Carolina, five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.  He is also survived by one brother, three sisters and many special nieces and nephews.

“Captain” Curnie was a lifelong commercial fisherman retiring at the young age of 82. He was a highly respected Captain and fisherman, owning and operating numerous boats over the years along the Southeast coast.  He was loved by his crew and mentored many young fishermen.  Curnie will be remembered as generous and caring always there for his friends and family.  He was a master boat builder and carpenter.  Curnie was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Brunswick, Georgia.

A gathering of family and friends will be at Chapman’s Funeral Home Brunswick, Georgia from 5-7 pm September 30. 2014.   Burial will take place in North Carolina on Thursday, October 2, 2014.  The family will receive friends and family from 2-3 pm at the family cemetery, Tator Hole, in Pamlico Beach.  Graveside service will follow visitation.  In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, Georgia.
