Monday, October 13, wildlife biologist Kelly Davis will give a presentation entitled “Lake Mattamuskeet: an international resource at risk?” The Cypress Group of the Sierra Club sponsors the talk at its monthly meeting held at 131 Oakmont Drive, Greenville, at 7:30 p.m.

Lake Mattamuskeet, a 40,000 acre wintering waterfowl mecca and national wildlife-refuge centerpiece, is caught in a tug-of-war between private groups and government agencies each tugging on opposite sides of a rope. Attend the presentation and discover how the passive wind-driven management of the lake level benefits waterfowl and other migratory birds and fish. Ms. Davis will also discuss the resources that will be at risk, if the lake is actively managed for deeper water levels, which some of the sports-fishing groups want.

Since 1892, the Sierra Club has been working to protect communities, wild places and the planet itself. It is the oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. The Cypress Group includes 19 counties across northeastern North Carolina. Its meetings are free and open to the public.
