HED: Nurse Aide II graduates recognized in ceremony
The Nurse Aide Program at Beaufort County Community College recently held a recognition event and open house in honor of six students completing their Nurse Aide II studies in Washington. During the recognition ceremony, each graduate was presented a certificate in honor of their completion of the program. A reception in the Nurse Aide Classroom in Building 12 followed.
Students completing the program are Fonne Norman of Chocowinity, Julian Carr of Greenville, William Arce of Pinetown, and Candice Bell, Takeika Johnson and Sherry Spear of Washington.
During the ceremony, attended by family and friends of the students and BCCC officials, Nurse Aide Program Coordinator Sue Gurley thanked the families of the students for their support.
Instructor Anne Davenport recalled the students’ hard work and praised their efforts to obtain their Nurse Aide II certification but also encouraged them to continue their nursing studies.
“It’s been a very long journey,” she said, adding, “But I hope to see many of you back in this building soon.”

HED: BCCC schedules two courses for Concealed Carry Permit seekers
The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer courses in November and December for individuals seeking to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
The course will be offered Thursday and Saturday, Nov. 6 and 8, and Thursday and Saturday, Dec. 4 and 6 on the BCCC campus. Permit seekers need to attend only one of the courses in order to take the examination to earn the Concealed Carry Permit.
The registration fee for either class is $75. Each course will require a minimum of seven registrants.
Potential students should be familiar with their weapon and are advised that this course is not for beginning users of handguns. The instructor will have the right to remove a student from the class at any time if he believes the student is not familiar with their handgun or is unsafe.
The Thursday session of each course will meet from 6 to 11 p.m. and will involve classroom instruction. The Saturday session will meet from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include classroom instruction, a written test and firing range work.
Students will have to earn a minimum score of 70 percent on the written test and hit a target 28 times out of 40 rounds of ammunition in order to qualify for a certificate to apply for a Concealed Carry Permit at their county’s Sheriff’s Office.

HED: How to find, interview and hire great employees
Are you tired of having candidates do well during interviews only to not live up to their promise on the job? Is your business a revolving door of employees coming and going? Then this seminar, How to Find, Interview and Hire Great People for Any Small Business, is for you.
The seminar will be 2 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 23 in Room 828 of Building 8 on the Beaufort County Community College campus is for you. It is free of charge but to ensure adequate preparation of materials, pre-registration is requested.
It is co-sponsored by the Small Business Center at BCCC and the Washington/Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce.
During the seminar, instructor John Formica will give participants tips on how to find and hire great people. As a former Disney insider with over 25 years of hospitality experience, Formica will share his proven success strategies to help small business owners create a “magical customer experience.”

HED: Understand and work with different ages and generations
The Small Business Center at Beaufort County Community College will offer a workshop to help current and prospective business owners understand and work with different age groups and generations.
The workshop will be offered 2 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, in Room 828 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The seminar is free of charge but pre-registration is encouraged so that the college can adequately prepare materials. Each age group and generation has its own characteristics. Not knowing what they are can affect worker relationships, customer service, employee morale, productivity and profit. This seminar will teach current and potential business owners how to understand and work with each group more effectively.
The instructor for the course is Emily Balance, a licensed professional counselor and a member of the National Speakers Association and the American Association for Therapeutic Humor.
The seminar is also sponsored by the Washington/Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce.

HED: Six seats still available for The Phantom of the Opera
Only six seats remain for the Beaufort County Community College trip to Durham Saturday, Oct. 18, to see The Phantom of the Opera.
The chartered bus will leave the BCCC campus at 7:30 am and travel to the Paul Green Theater in Chapel Hill for a backstage tour and special lecture by Professor Jeff Phipps.
The group will then have lunch at the French restaurant – Kitchen – followed by front door delivery to the 2 p.m. matinee at the Durham Performing Arts Center.
The bus will return to Washington around 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be available on the bus.
