ECA competes at Swim for a Cure in Greensboro

More than 60 swimmers from East Carolina Aquatics competed in the 2014 Swim for the Cure meet Oct. 24-26 benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Hosted by the High Point Swim Club at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, the meet drew more than 500 competitors from 10 teams in North Carolina and Virginia.

Ten-year-old Emma Hastings of Greenville continued her record-setting season by breaking three ECA records. On the first night, Hastings’ 500 freestyle time of 5:57.48 shattered an 11-year-old record of 6:10.18 set by former standout Kristen Hardee. Later that night, Hastings broke one of the oldest records in team history, the 9-10 girls’ 200-individual medley, set in 1994 by Mera Adamovich. Hastings’ time was 2:39.91. On Saturday, Hastings broke her own record by eight-tenths clocking 2:15.19 in the 200 free. She won four of the 9-10 girls’ events.

Eleven-year-old Will Barker of Swansboro won five events. Other event winners were Cameron Anderson of Tarboro, Campbell Barnes of Chocowinity, Emerson Barnhill of Greenville, Cameron Eure of Morehead City, and Avery Hastings and Jack Hastings of Greenville.

Barker, Barnes, Emma Hastings, Eure, as well as Abigail Burns of Greenville, Claire Chesnutt of Cedar Point, Connor Dennison of Greenville, Morgan Despres of Winterville, Andrew Landry of Greenville, Grant Meadows of Swansboro and Seth Tillery of Greenville earned qualifying times for the N.C. 14 and Under Championships.

Anderson, Emerson Barnhill, Morgan Despres, Kevin Andrews of Washington, Kelly Barnhill of Greenville, Zach Darden of Goldsboro, Bradley Downs of Winterville, and Trey Pofahl and Cary Pou of Greenville achieved qualifying times for the N.C. Senior State Championships.

ECA will return to action Nov. 8-9 at Minges Natatorium in Greenville.
