J. Harvey Mason, 103, of Belews Creek, NC, passed away Saturday December 20, 2014 at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale, NC.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday, December 27, 2014 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington, NC and will be conducted by Rev. John Yount. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Pete Credle, James Cahoon, Kenneth Cahoon, Leon Mason, Pat Spencer and Sammy Marshall will serve as pallbearers.
Born on January12, 1911 in Hyde County, NC to the late Joseph Redding Mason and Ina Bennett Mason, he moved with his wife and son to Washington, NC in 1947 where he lived until 2006. In December 2006 he moved to Belews Creek, NC to live with his son, Joe Mason.
Harvey Mason was a special and remarkable man who will be grieved for and greatly missed by many, many people. He had three major careers in his life. The first was as a lumberman until the age of 40. At that time he embarked on a completely different career for the next 25 years as a radio and television engineer. He was chief engineer for WITN-TV for 21 years until he retired at the age of 65. He then began a third career of 30 years teaching electronics and electricity at Martin and Beaufort Community Colleges. He taught many sons of former pupils. He was loved and respected by both students and faculty.
Harvey Mason was a strong, humble, brilliant, quiet man. His common sense was remarkable. His approached the toughest problems quietly and methodically until he solved them. He never lost his temper or raised his voice. He set an example that many tried to follow. He was a member of the Hyde county Masonic Lodge for over seventy years. From the age of 98 to 100, he built a 42 foot pontoon boat. He enjoyed building boats about as much as he did riding and fishing on them.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Helen Credle Mason in 2008, brothers, Clyde, Marvin, and John Mason and sisters, Gladys Jordan and Mary Elizabeth Mason. Survivors include his sister, Marie Mason of Raleigh, N.C., his only son Joe Mason, and a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm Friday, December 26, 2014 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington, NC.
