Naismith Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins’ return to Washington for the first time in 35 years is the Daily News’ No. 5 story of 2014.

Wilkins played for the Pam Pack basketball team from 1977-’79, winning two state championships, which still stand as the last titles among revenue sports in Washington High School history.

The City of Washington honored Wilkins by making Dec. 17 “Dominique Wilkins Day” and the high school retired his No. 21 jersey later that evening during a special ceremony at halftime during the Pam Pack’s game against Greene Central.

“For me, it was a real moment and it shows you how life comes full circle,” Wilkins said, “and to be with my family, wife, the fans that supported me for so many years, and give some respect to Coach Dave Smith.”

While rain canceled the parade Mayor Mac Hodges had originally planned, hundreds still flooded the Civic Center to welcome back one of the greatest players to ever dribble a basketball. As some of his closest family and friends sat by his side, Wilkins stood at the podium and spoke to fans and the Washington football team about his high school years, as well as the importance of maintaining camaraderie among teammates and soaking in the subtle life lessons given off by coaches.

Wilkins then presented head coach Sport Sawyer with the Laurel Wreath Award, the highest honor given for outstanding athletic achievement in North Carolina, for fielding a team of character, resolve, academic integrity and ability.

During the halftime ceremony, Wilkins was presented with two framed No. 21 jerseys, one for him to take home and the other that will become a permanent fixture at the David W. Smith Gymnasium.

“This is a great honor to come back to where it all started for me,” Wilkins said. “I’m so sorry I stayed away so long, but it’s not how long you stay (away), it’s when you come back. And now I’m back.”
