Mr. Robert Michael “Mike” Cox, age 70, a resident of the Clark’s Neck Road Community, died Friday, December 26, 2014 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Riverview Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Keith Hudson and Dr. James O. Hagwood.  Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington.

The following will serve as active pallbearers:  Bill Dawson, Larry White, Tim Etheridge, Kyle Cox, Jimmie Hardee, and B.B. Cox.

Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews, Cecil Singleton, Daphine Singleton, Jason Lewis, Mason Clement and David Linton.

Mr. Cox was born in Beaufort County on June 19, 1944.  He was the son of the late Charlie Robert Cox and Ruby Leigh Latham Cox.  Mr. Cox graduated from Washington High School in 1964.  He served in the Army National Guard.  Mr. Cox retired from E. I. DuPont in Kinston with 35 years of service.  While at DuPont, he served on the fire brigade.  He later worked at Thomson TV and Radio Shack.  Mr. Cox was a member of the Clark’s Neck Volunteer Fire Department.  He was a member of the Riverview Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Usher and Sunday School Teacher in the Children’s Department.  Mr. Cox was very faithful and dedicated to his church.

Mr. Cox worked hard to provide for his family. He enjoyed fishing and spending with family at the river.  Mr. Cox babysat his two younger grandchildren since they were born and spent countless hours playing with them especially pulling them in their wagon with his lawn tractor.  He was affectionately known as “Papa” to not only his grandchildren, but to so many more.

Mr. Cox’s passion was for missions.  He had been on several mission trips: Honduras, Wyoming, Gulfport and the Outer Banks.  Mr. Cox loved serving his Lord in this capacity and did as long as his health permitted.

Mr. Cox was married to the former Marie Moore, whom he fell in love with at first sight.

He is survived by his wife, Marie of the home; his daughter, Wendy Cox Idol and husband, Greg of Wilmington; his sons, Robert Michael “Robbie” Cox, Jr. and wife, Rhonda of Washington, Lindsay Ray Cox and wife, Amy of Washington; seven grandchildren, Amber Marie Idol, Johnathan Michael Schmitt, Isabella Carleta Idol, Ashley Taylor Cox, Campbell Noel Idol, Amanda Grace Cox, Noah Paul Cox; sister in law, Christine Cox of Washington; two brother in laws, Ray D. Moore and wife, Carolyn of Washington, Lee Moore of Washington; two sister in laws, Christine Woolard of Washington, Ruby M. Crisp and husband, Ben of Washington; numerous nieces and nephews he deeply loved and special friends, the Clement family.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Cox was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Gene Cox; and two brother in laws, Jerry Moore and Gary Woolard.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Paul Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington and other times at the home.
