Martha Nan Barnes Harris, age 82, a resident of 2545 Bayview Road, Bath, passed away at her home on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015. A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at 2:30 p.m., officiated by The Rev. Diane Tomlinson. There will be a celebration of her life with family and friends. Entombment will follow in the columbarium at St. Thomas Church.

Nan was born in Wilson in 1932 to Hazel O’Brien Barnes and Dr. Vernon Meredith Barnes. After graduating from high school Nan attended Fairfax Women’s College in Waynesboro, Va. In 1954, she married Leon Taylor Harris and moved to Washington. Nan served as the librarian at Pamlico Community School and then worked in the library at Washington High School until her retirement in 1996.

Nan was an avid gardener and loved her yard and flowers. She was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church, Washington, and then later a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Bath.

Nan is survived by her daughters, Brien Harris Campbell of Wilmington, and Alice Harris Faucette and husband Walker Faucette of Bath; her granddaughters, Sarah Anne Watkins and husband Bailey of Raleigh, Katherine Faucette of Greenville, Taylor Campbell Baysden and her husband Lauren of Wilmington and Morgan Campbell of Wilmington; her great-granddaughter, Anna Barnes Watkins; and her son-in-law, Dwight Campbell of Wilmington. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Leon Taylor (L.T.) Harris.

The family would like to thank Becky Woolard of Bath and Clarine Robertson of Washington, for helping to make possible for Nan to stay home and look at her beloved river every day.

The family will receive friends at the home, 2545 Bayview Road, Bath, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015.

In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made in Nan’s memory to Community Hospice Foundation, PO Box 8109, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 or a charity of one’s choice.
