WILLIAM T. “BILL” GILGO

June 12, 1939 – Jan. 5, 2015

 

William T. “Bill” Gilgo, 75, longtime resident of New Bern, NC passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Monday, January 5, 2015. Bill was born on June 12, 1939 in Washington, NC, where he grew up, met his wife, Glenda, and was a member of the 1956 Washington Pam Pack Walk of Fame Team.

Bill graduated from The Citadel in Charleston, SC where he had an illustrious football career as “The Golden Toe”, kicking many late-game field goals in critical moments. He was inducted into The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007 as a member of the Class of 1961-62.

Bill was a recipient of the NC State Long Leaf Pine Award for his years of service as a State Probation Officer. He retired to enjoy boating, fishing, gardening, and travel and his family.He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucy and Jim Gilgo, as well as, brothers; James Gilgo, Jimmy Silverthorne and Gordon Mixon.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Glenda; son, Chuck, and his wife Kristi, of New Bern, son, Kip, and his wife Sandi, of New Bern, daughter, Marty White of Bayboro, nine grandchildren; Josh White, Steve Gilgo, Lindsay White, Hunter Gilgo, Sydney Gilgo, Allyson White, Blair Gilgo, William White and Garrett Gilgo; and his sister, Geraldine Newbern of Washington, NC.

The family will visit with friends from 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Pollock-Best Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, January 9, 2015 at Pollock-Best Chapel with Rev. Charlene Pierce Guider officiating. Burial will follow at New Bern Memorial Cemetery.
