John Gargaro

Jan. 24, 1939 – Feb. 14, 2015

 

Mr. John Gargaro, age 76, a resident of Washington, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, at his residence. Mr. Gargaro was born in San Polo, Matese, Italy, on Jan. 24, 1939, son of the late Salvatore and Assunta Iacobellis Gargaro. He attended schools in Italy and Bronx, N.Y. On Jan. 21, 1961, he married the former Elsie Coffey who survives. Mr. Gargaro was a machinist at Atwell Industries in Ayden, where he retired in 2001. He was an active member of Mother of Mercy Church, The Grace Martin Senior Center, co-founder of West Islip Soccer Club and was also known as “The Candy Man.” He touched the lives of many family members and friends.

In addition to his family, he is survived by two sons, Sal Gargaro (Lori), Bayshore, N.Y.; John M. Gargaro (Lisa), Washington; his grandchildren, Danny, Noelle, Marisa, Lauren, Justin and Brianna; and one brother, Mario Gargaro (Frances) of upstate New York.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015, at Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, 112 W. Ninth St., Washington, with Father Brendan Buckler officiating. A graveside service will be held Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, at 4 p.m. at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hillside Funeral Service & Cremation and other times at the home.
