The Beaufort County Arts Council will again partner with the East Carolina University School of Theatre and Dance (SOTD) Story Book Theatre to present the Robert Louis Stevenson classic “Treasure Island” today. Curtain time is 3 p.m. and tickets are only $8, plus tax.
Under the direction of ECU professor Patricia “Patch” Clark, coordinator of the Theatre Education program in the SOTD at East Carolina University, the production asks its young audience to set sail on a quest to find Captain Flint’s buried treasure. Recommended for audiences from kindergarten through sixth grade, young patrons will also be invited to participate in a children’s theatre workshop immediately following the performance where they will write and perform their own short play.
ECU Storybook Theatre combines talents of students from across all theatre art disciplines and teaches younger audience members the enjoyment of the performing arts along with the excitement of books and reading. The arts council is pleased to be working with ECU in another of several collaborations coming up in 2015-2016.
“Our relationship with ECU is a wonderful connection to bring vital and enriching live performances to the Turnage,” said BCAC Executive Director Joey Toler. “We have let Patch and her colleagues know that they can consider the Turnage their ‘home away from home’ when looking for venues to expand their outreach activities.”
Other upcoming collaborations with ECU School of Theatre and Dance include two events on April 11: a four-hour children’s theatre workshop beginning at 9 a.m., and later that evening, the concert version of the musical theatre farce “Lucky Stiff.” For information about these, as well as tickets to today’s performance, visit www.beaufortcountyartscouncil.org or call 252-946-2504.
