KINSTON — The Washington Karate Academy may have a new home, leaving behind its well-known dojo, but the success of Sensei David Warren’s karateka has not changed.

Aida Perez, 12, took home first place in Kunite (fighting) at the 12th Annual Karate Madness Open Championship held at Kinston High School on March 28. Perez was the only competitor from the Washington Karate Academy to take part in this year’s tournament, which was hosted by Sensei Joseph Jones.

Competing in the 12-13 age division for orange to green belts, Perez also took home third-place honors in Kobudo Kata (weapons) and a fourth-place medal in the empty hand Kata (forms).

“Aida has improved a lot for a young girl,” Warren said. “Very impressive for strength and I have total confidence if any girl her size attacks her, she could definitely take care of herself. Very strong for a young girl. Very helpful and eager to show new people the ropes.”

The tournament marked the first of the season for Perez, a beginner, who competed in just one showcase last season and has been training with Warren for more than a year.

Perez’s finish is the latest accolade netted from the Academy since its move to the second floor of Athletic Edge Sports and Fitness Center, located of West 5th Street in Washington, in November.

The new dojo is certainly an upgrade for the Washington Karate Academy, coming fully equipped with a changing room, water fountains and more space.

“It’s cleaner and more up to date. It’s just a great facility,” Warren said. “And after 30 years, I don’t have to clean the floor!”

Perez and others from the Washington Karate Academy will compete in the East Carolina University Invitational Karate Tournament on April 18.
