The long awaited documentary on Dominique Wilkins titled, “Dominique Belongs to Us,” will debut Friday on ESPN at 8 p.m.
The ESPN Films documentary, part of the SEC Storied series, is directed by Kenan K. Holley and produced by Rob Harvel.
“Expect the unexpected,” Holley said. “People who are Dominique Wilkins fans, not just the casual fans of the NBA, but people who are actually Dominique Wilkins fans had no idea that this is his story and where he came from, something that he endured as a teenager.”
The story bypasses most of Wilkins’ professional career and concentrates on adolescence, where he played alongside a dominant support cast on the hardwood of the old Washington High School, suiting up for a team that won 56-straight games and won two Class 3-A state championships.
Alongside a medley of Division I prospects, the late-‘70s Pam Pack teams used their high-flying, transition basketball to dazzle opposing teams, pack the gymnasium every night and instill a sense of pride in a community.
The film’s title, which was originally “The Human Highlight Film,” was changed to reflect Wilkins’ tumultuous transition from high school to college.
“Once we developed the film, we decided we need something different because this is the story of his entire life,” Holley said. “Beyond his professional career and what he’s known for, “The Human Highlight Film,” this is the story of someone who is searching for home on one hand, and on the other hand are the fans going everywhere he went who are searching for him. The way he played made people feel like he belonged to them.”
Following the debut, the film will also air on the SEC Network on April 27 at 9 p.m. “Dominique Belongs to Us” joins four other ESPN Films being released this month, including documentaries on Shaquille O’Neal and the 1985 Mississippi State baseball.
