Nurse Aide II graduates recognized in ceremony

The Nurse Aide Program at Beaufort County Community College held a recognition and open house in honor of students completing their Nurse Aide II studies in Washington.

Students completing the program were Nakia Johnson of Engelhard, Latoya Farrow of Pinetown and Elizabeth Baucom, Monique Burton and James DeMetro of Washington.

During the recognition ceremony, each graduate was presented a certificate in honor of their completion of the program. A reception in the Nurse Aide Classroom in Building 12 followed the ceremony.

Join the Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College for a discussion about finances, investing, healthcare and social security in a series of five workshops this spring.

Select one topic or attend all the workshops led by Jordan Cantrell of Edward Jones 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays beginning May 13 and ending June 10 in Room 830 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The registration fee for each session is $10.

Rules of the Road: The fundamental concepts for building wealth through investing will be covered as well as information about planning and saving for college. May 27.

Five Money Questions for Women: All women should plan for their financial futures! Gain perspective on this important process and learn to set financial goals. June 3.

Securing Social Security: David Gullison of Franklin Templeton will discuss tools for timing your entry into Social Security. Learn ways to maximize amounts for individuals and spouses. June 10.

Learn to take better photographs with BCCC

Learn to take better photographs regardless of the type of camera you use with three workshops offered by the Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College this spring.

BCCC will offer two classes that will help you improve your photographs using a digital single-lens-reflex, or SLR, camera Thursday and Saturday, May 7 and 9 and June 4 and 6.

Each two-session class will meet 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Room 829 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus to acquaint you with all the buttons on your camera and how they can improve your photographs. Instructor Jamie Konarski Davidson will cover the basics of exposure and metering, using scene modes to your advantage, useful filter for outdoor shooting and flash basics. The Saturday session will meet from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. first in Washington’s Historic District where you will receive hands-on instruction in composition. Later, in the classroom, students will share and review the morning’s images.

The cost for either workshop includes a $65 registration fee and a $5 technology fee.

BCCC will also offer one workshop to help those who own a point-and-shoot camera take better photographs with their cameras. This workshop will be 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, June 8, in Room 829 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.

Students will learn the basic button uses, the auto and scene modes, exposure adjustments and creating pleasing compositions to enable you to take better photographs that you can edit and share with pride.

The cost of this workshop is $30.

BCCC to offer short-term TIG Welding class

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer a class in the Gas Tungsten Arc welding that will give students the skills they need to take a certification test offered by the American Welding Society.

The class will be 9 a.m. to noon, Mondays and Thursdays, beginning May 11 and ending July 9 in the Beaufort County Skills Center on Page Road near Washington.

In this hands-on class, students will be introduced to Gas Tungsten Arc, or TIG, welding. Students will learn basic safety practices as well as basic welding principles. Topics will include metallurgy and welding inspection.

Those who decide to pursue certification through the American Welding Society will be able to take an exam at the end of class.

Welding kits will be provided; however, if students wish to order their own for an estimated $203, kits will be discussed during the first day of class. Kits typically include an Arc 1 Auto Helmet, chipping hammer, welding gloves, measuring tape, welders jacket, work gloves, standard tip cleaner, single flint spark lighter, soapstone and holder, carbon steel wire brush and two types of safety glasses.

Substitute teacher training offered

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer a class to prepare individuals to work as substitute teachers in the local public school system 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.. Monday through Thursday, May 11 through 14, in Room 829 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.

Students will receive information on learning expectations, time management, monitoring student interaction, classroom management and many other topics related to being a substitute teacher.

The registration fee for the course is $70. The textbook, which should be purchased from the BCCC Bookstore before the first day of class, is available for $21.75. No textbooks will be sold in class.
