JOHNNY GIBBS SR.

July 19, 1944 – April 24, 2015

 

Mr. Johnny Gibbs, Sr., 70, a resident of 4664 Hwy 264 East,  Harding’s Village, Washington, N.C. died on Friday, April 24, 2015 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville, NC. Funeral services will be held at Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 1:00pm. Final viewing will commence one hour before the service at the church.

Mr. Gibbs was born July 19, 1944 in Washington, North Carolina to the late Clem and Mary Sidney Jones Gibbs.

Mr. Gibbs graduated from P.S. Jones High School in 1962 and attended Beaufort Community College. Mr. Gibbs was the owner and operator of Gibbs Automotive Tune-Up Service, a used tire and battery business, and a tax preparation business.  During his professional career, he worked at FCX Incorporated for twenty-three years. After FCX, he worked with Southern States for a short time before becoming a community service representative/inspector with the Washington Housing Authority in 1988. He was certified by HUD as a Uniform Physical Condition Standard Inspector and received numerous awards from the Department of Housing. He retired in 2008.

Mr. Gibbs was a member of Mount Olive A.M.E. Zion Church where he served terms as a Trustee, Steward, and Building Fund Secretary.

Mr. Gibbs is survived by his wife of fifty three years, Janice Harding Gibbs, of the home; one son, Reginald Dale Gibbs of Durham, NC; one brother, Ronald Gibbs (Lola) of Washington, NC; one sister, Devonne Thompson (David) of Washington, NC; one sister-in-law, Dorothy S. Gibbs of Washington, NC; and many relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Gibbs was preceded in death by two children, Beverly Lynn Gibbs and Johnny Gibbs, Jr.; two brothers, Clemment Gibbs, Jr. and George Gibbs, Sr.; and three sisters, Sadie Jane Gibbs, Mary Alice Taylor and Pamela Gibbs Blount.

Visitation will be Friday, May 01, 2015 from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Leon Randolph Chapel. Other times the family will receive relatives and friends at the home.
