R. David Burbage, Sr.

March 7, 1937 – May 2, 2015

 

Mr. Rufus “David” Burbage, Sr., age 78, a resident of 18669 U.S. Highway 264 East, Pinetown, died Saturday, May 2, 2015.

A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 6, 2015 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington with Minister Linwood Adams and Rev. William Creech officiating.  Burial will follow in the Burbage Family Cemetery, 4477 Sidney Road, Belhaven with military rites.

The following will serve as pallbearers:  Jay Morgan IV, Dustin Morgan, Gray Burbage, Phillip Little, Jimmy Burbage and Eric Slade.  Steve Furlough and Gus Satchell will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Burbage was born in Ransomville, N.C. on March 7, 1937. He was the son of the late Rufus Burbage and Pearlie Daw Burbage.  Mr. Burbage was a 1955 graduate of John A. Wilkinson High School.  He served his country with honor and was a member of the U. S. Army Infantry as an anti-aircraft supply clerk from 1956 to 1958.  Mr. Burbage was a proud farmer and owner of Burbage Farms, Inc.  He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to respect the land with which God had entrusted him.   He enjoyed giving food away from his garden.  Mr. Burbage never saw a stranger, he enjoyed talking to people.  Mr. Burbage loved baseball and the New York Yankees.  In Mr. Burbage’s early years, he sold insurance.  He later sold Tip Top Bread throughout Eastern North Carolina.  He was known as the “Bread Man”.  Mr. Burbage was a member of the Bath United Methodist Church.

On July 8, 1959, Mr. Burbage married the former Linda Waters, who survives.

Surviving with his wife are his children, Robin B. Morgan (Jay) of Bath and David R. Burbage, Jr. (Zina) of Sidney.   He has four grandchildren, Jay Morgan IV (Deanna), Dustin Morgan, Davey Ann Little (Phillip) and Gray Burbage; and one great grandchild, Allison Morgan. Mr. Burbage is also survived by two sisters, Doris Karnowski of Washington and Betsy Campbell of Yeatesville and a brother, James Burbage of Sidney.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Paul Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington and other times at the home and following the service at the cemetery.
