Miller named President of BCCC Faculty Senate for 2015-2016
Brian Miller, lead computer information technology and programming instructor at Beaufort County Community College, will serve as President of the BCCC Faculty Senate for the 2015-2016 Academic Year. He is joined in the Faculty Senate leadership by Lynne Modlin, vice president; Kate Purvis, secretary, and Kimberly Mullis, treasurer.
A native of Lake Charles, La., Miller moved to Washington as a teenager. He graduated from Washington High School and attended N.C. State University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in management of information systems from Mount Olive College and a master’s degree in technology systems with a concentration in computer networking management from East Carolina University. Miller is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served on submarines from 1994 to 2003.
Miller joined the BCCC faculty in January 2013 and was named Lead Instructor in July 2013. Before joining the BCCC faculty, he served as IT Administrator at Carver Machine Works in Washington. Miller and his wife, Rachael, a recent BCCC graduate, have two children. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and watching movies, particularly those concerning military history. He and his son are active in Cub Scouts and enjoy camping and outdoor activities.
Modlin, of Jamesville, joined BCCC’s faculty as an instructor in the Associate Degree Nursing Program in 2007 and was named Faculty Member of the Year for 2014. A Martin County native, she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from East Carolina University and a master’s degree in nursing education from Walden University. She is specially trained in the operations of high-fidelity simulators. Modlin and her husband, Michael, have two children. She is a member of Cedar Branch Baptist Church where she is Chairman of the Personnel Committee. In her spare time, Modlin enjoys spending time with her family and gardening.
Purvis joined BCCC’s full-time faculty in 2013 as a Developmental English and Reading Instructor after teaching at the college part-time since 2012. A native of Tarboro, she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and master’s degrees in elementary and reading education from Appalachian State University. She served as an Instructional Coach for Pitt County Schools before joining the BCCC faculty. Purvis and her husband, Martin, live in Washington. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, working in the yard and spending time on the Pamlico River.
Mullis, of Washington, has been active in the BCCC Faculty Senate, previously serving as President of the organization. A native of Gloucester, Va., Mullis began teaching part-time at BCCC in 2001. She joined the full-time faculty in 2005 and in 2012 became Lead Instructor of Mathematics. Mullis earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in mathematics education from East Carolina University. Mullis and her husband, John, live in Washington and have two children. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, cooking, and being outdoors.
The purpose of the Faculty Senate is to aide communication among BCCC faculty and between its members and the college administration. It also makes recommendations on college policy and governance issues of concern to faculty, advocates for faculty viewpoints on pertinent issues and works to develop cooperation among faculty in various instructional programs at the college, among other activities.
BCCC offers workshops in social media platforms
Learn to use various social media platforms and devices this summer in a series of workshops offered by the Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College.
All classes will be held on the BCCC campus. The schedule is as follows:
Shutterfly® Workshop 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, June 9 and 11, in Room 822 of Building 8. Shutterfly is a social media platform that allows users to turn their photographs into calendars, mugs, canvas art collages, photo books and more. Instructor Stacey Gerard will lead participants through all of the steps to become easily proficient in this great gift-giving tool. The cost includes a $30 registration fee and a $5 technology fee.
Android Workshop 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 16, in room 830 of Building 8. Bring your own Android telephone or tablet to this fun session! During the workshop, participants will learn about the apps, security settings, set-up options and entertainment features of their telephones and tablets. Registration fee for either class is $15.
Facebook® Workshop 9 to 11:30 a.m., Monday and Wednesday, June 15 and 17 in Room 127A of Building 2. Facebook has revolutionized the way we stay in touch with friends and family. Instructor Jessica Crocker will show participants the best way to use this social media application including best practices for managing an existing Facebook page. The cost includes a $20 registration fee and a $5 technology fee.
IPhone® and IPad® Workshop 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18 and 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, in Room 830 of Building 8. Bring your own device and learn to best enjoy your Apple IPhone and IPad using various tips and tricks to help you get the most from these products. The registration fee is $15.
Pinterest Workshop® 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 22, in room 127A of Building 2. Learn to use Pinterest to help you cook delicious food, decorate your home, create a flower-filled garden and gather ideas from all over the world. This workshop will teach you to use this popular, free social media platform. The cost includes a $15 registration fee and a $5 technology fee.
Instagram® and Twitter® Workshop 9 to 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 24, in Room 822 of Building 8. Come learn about these social media platforms that are so popular with today’s young people. During this workshop, participants will learn to create their own accounts and use Instagram and Twitter to stay in touch with young family members and friends. The cost includes a $15 registration fee and a $5 technology fee.

Substitute teacher training offered
The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College will offer a class to prepare individuals to work as substitute teachers in the local public school system 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning June 11 and ending June 30, in Room 829 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus.
Students will receive information on learning expectations, time management, monitoring student interaction, classroom management and many other topics related to being a substitute teacher.
The registration fee for the course is $70. The textbook, which should be purchased from the BCCC Bookstore before the first day of class, is available for $21.75. No textbooks will be sold in class.
