OVERCOME: The Pamlico River laid claim to a luxury sailboat Saturday morning, sending a 46-foot Hunter down into 18- to 24-feet of water. The boat was docked at the end of the dock at Carolina Winds Marina in Washington, just east of the bridge on U.S. Highway 17 Business. At 6 a.m., the boat was flooded and pumps were ineffective because it was taking on too much water. The boat, worth an estimated $200,000, sank at approximately 8:30 a.m., leaving only the mast above the water. Local authorities marked off the area with oil booms to trap any fuel or oil leaking from the vessel. The owner of the vessel, Kevin Byrd, was out of town and arrived at the scene shortly before the boat sank, according to witnesses. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.
