James M. Cutler
March 13, 1952 – July 22, 2015
James Mitchell Cutler, 63, of Washington, entered eternal life on July 22, 2015 from his home with family. Mr. Cutler was born in Beaufort County, NC on March 13, 1952 to the late Clyde Duffie Cutler and Mary Elizabeth Jefferson Cutler. He served in the U.S. Army where he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He retired from PCS Phosphate, formerly known as Texas Gulf, and owned Mitchells Upholstery Service for over 39 years, which is located behind his home. He is a second-generation upholsterer, which he took pride in learning from his father. For a few years, he owned Cahoots Feed & Tack where he sold feed. He loved and lived a simple life. He enjoyed bird hunting, riding horses, rodeos and pulling antique carriages.
He is survived by his daughter and caretaker, Jaimie Grissom of Washington and her mother Carol Ashe of Chocowinity; his sons, Anthony Cutler of Galveston, TX and Tony Webster, Jr. of Washington. He was a father to many. Additionally, he is survived by his brothers, Clyde Duffie Cutler, Jr. and wife Lois, Ray Cutler and wife Sue, Michael L. Cutler and John Cutler, all of Washington; his sisters, Louise Ambrose and husband Alvin of Washington and Anna Dillahunty of Virginia; his nephews and nieces, Walt Wallace, Shawn Cutler, Beth Boyd, Lori Gill, Nathan Cutler, Blake Cutler, Cheryl Smith, Pamela Bird and Kevin Dillahunty. He was predeceased by his nieces, Mandy Dawn Wallace and Elizabeth Hope Cutler.
His family was blessed to learn many valuable lessons: If you believe in the Lord, you will live longer. The more family you have, the more security you have. Always stop and talk to those you love, as it may be the last time you see them. Sunkist is the healthiest drink for you. The best cheese biscuits are made at the #7 Store across from Beaufort Community College. Lunch should be from No. 1 Chinese. Give what you have as long as you have it. Always, always have a “good backup.”
A celebration of life with military honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Alligood Church of God in Washington, officiated by Pastor Phillip Jethro. Burial will follow in the Cutler Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 24, 2015 from 7-9pm at Hillside Funeral Service. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Eastern North Carolina, 3739 National Drive, Suite 110 Raleigh, NC.
