Bernis Merlon Jones, 74, of 1625 Mill Hole Road, Washington, died Monday, August 3, 2015.

A celebration of his life will be held at 7:30 PM Friday, August 7, 2015 at Alligood Church of God, officiated by Pastor Phillip Jethro. The family will receive friends at the church from 6:00 PM until the service hour and at other times at the home of his son, located at 1670 Mill Hole Road, Washington.

Mr. Jones was born on January 1, 1941 in Beaufort County, the son of the late Eddie Jones and Bertha Cayton Jones. He married the former Ethel Mae Woolard on June 16, 1960 who preceded him in death in 2012. Mr. Jones was a longtime member of the Alligood Church of God where in the earlier years he served as Sunday School superintendent as well as one of the choir directors. He had a longtime affiliation with Jones Brothers of River Road in Washington, where he worked with his brothers for many years. Merlon, as he was known by his friends, was one of the owners of Jones Tile Company.

He is survived by a daughter, Angela Jones Best and husband Patrick of Pinetown, NC; a son Bernis “Bernie” Merlon Jones, Jr. of Washington; a brother, Jesse Taylor Jones and wife Shirley of Washington; three sister-in-laws, Carolyn Jones, Rosa Lee Jones and Ethel Warner and five grandchildren, Haley Jones, Seth Jones, Nicholas Jones, Matthew Best and Sophia Best. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Mae Jones; three brothers, Johnnie Warner, Eddie L. “Lukie” Jones, Jamie Jones and two sisters, Gertrude Mish and Katie Liverman.
