Lorena Ambrose Sawyer, age 92, a resident of Greenville, N.C., passed away Monday, August 10, 2015.

Visitation was held 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory. A graveside service will be held 2:00 P.M. on Friday, August 14, 2015 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens in Washington and officiated by Kent R. Gurganus with internment to follow.

Born at home on April 12, 1923 in the Five Points community of Pinetown, Lorena was the ninth child of the late George Wiley Ambrose and Rena Waters Ambrose. She grew up in the White Post community and was a 1941 graduate of Bath High School.

Lorena’s career included employment with the Raleigh News and Observer Afternoon Daily, the Washington Daily News, the News Bureau at East Carolina University, Department of Pediatrics at Brody School of Medicine and the office of Dean William Laupus, Brody School of Medicine. She retired December 1988 after 16 years of service with East Carolina University.

Lorena was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Lee Sawyer, a retired veteran of the United States Army who served during World War II. She was also preceded in death by five brothers: Ervin Bonner Ambrose, Aubrey Wendell Ambrose, Oadus Isiah Ambrose, George Ricks Ambrose, Carnie Ferrell Ambrose and a sister: Mary Ambrose Ross.

She is survived by her daughters: Loretta S. Brooks and Zelma S Sawyer of Greenville and her son: Lloyd Ambrose Sawyer and wife Sharon, of Hampstead; her grandchildren: Christopher B. Brooks and wife Mary of Valdese; Michele B. Miller and husband Rick of Raleigh; Kelly Worrell of Stumpy Point; Angie Creech of Hampstead; Paul Mathews of Greenville and her great-grandchildren: Genevieve Nicole Brooks, Christopher Alexander Brooks, Cameron Creech, Brandon Hammonds, Tyler Worrell and Ava Lynne Miller.

The family wishes to thank the Brody School of Medicine, Jim Peaden, MD, Dean Patton, MD, Tea Joon Lee, MD, and all of the staff with Vidant Home Health and Hospice in caring for Lorena and her family.
