Local organizations gives away backpacks to students

METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY HEALTH SERVICES READY TO LEARN: A local back-to-school event held on Saturday, Aug. 15, gave away a total of 375 backpacks for students in need in Beaufort County and 152 backpacks to students in Martin County. Several organizations helped to make the event possible, including Metropolitan AME Zion Church, Metropolitan Community Health Services, Washington Police Department and Beaufort County Department of Social Services, among others. Claudia Stokes, outreach coordinator for Metropolitan Community Health Services, said the event, which was held at Agape Clinic, was a success and they may try to partner together again next year. Along with school supplies, the event offered voter and healthcare registration as well as free health screenings.
