Mrs. Virginia Taylor Davenport Godley, age 97, formerly of Chocowinity, died Friday, September 4, 2015 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, September 6, 2015 in the chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington, officiated by Rev. Kent Gurganus. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
The following will serve as pallbearers: Jesse Power Jr., Tandy Dunn, Dwight Davenport, Will Hardy, Eric Hardy, Sam Cuthrell and John Cuthrell.
Mrs. Godley was born in Beaufort County on August 19, 1918, the daughter of the late Joe John Taylor and Lizzie Wells Taylor. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service and retired after 20 years of service. Mrs. Godley married Hoyle Vance Davenport who preceded her in death in 1945. In 1948 she married Henry Benjamin Godley, who preceded her in death in 1996. In her spare time she loved to sew and crochet, but her true passion and talent was gardening, as she could make absolutely anything grow.
Mrs. Godley is survived by two grandsons: William A. Hardy III and wife, Rose, Benjamin V. Hardy and wife, Laura; and four great-grandchildren: Amanda Hardy, Will Hardy IV, Joshua Hardy and Jacob Hardy.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a daughter: Sylvia Ann Davenport Hardy, three sisters: Elizabeth Taylor Davenport, Betty Taylor Jones and Mamie T. Taylor, two brothers: Emanuel Taylor and Melvin Taylor.
The family would like to thank a special niece: Luette Cuthrell and special friends: Ann Hardy and Jean Lamb.
The family will receive friends at 2:00 PM until the funeral hour Sunday, September 6, 2015 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington.
