CONTRIBUTED VETERAN EDUCATOR: The members of S.W. Snowden High School, class of 1959, who graduated 56 years ago, had a “Back to the ’50s” reunion and celebration to honor Mrs. Mattie D. Hunter, English teacher and senior adviser. Her first teaching job was at S.W. Snowden High School, and this was her first class. She spent 33 years in education where she was an excellent teacher and counselor. Mrs. Hunter, age 91, attended the celebration and had these words of advice for today’s adults and children: Believe in yourself, and strive to always do your best. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and always be sure God is pleased with your actions and decisions. The class of ’59 gave a donation in Mrs. Hunter’s name to St. John Baptist Church in Aurora. For many years, the church hosted the graduation services for S.W. Snowden High when it was a segregated school with no gym or auditorium.
