A local family realizes the American dream of owning their own home with the assistance of Washington Housing Nonprofit, a nonprofit operating as an instrumentality of the Washington Housing Authority.
The program is a valuable asset to our community and should be used and supported in order not to lose the program. Programs are offered to all residents, although our main objective is to serve low- to moderate-income residents.
The nonprofit has operated as a tried-and-true homeownership program for eight years, providing down payment assistance to the participants at the purchase of their first home.   We have assisted 29 families with the purchase of their first home with no foreclosures and currently have a pipeline of participants working toward their completion.
Through the success of the homeownership program, the local tax base has been increased by more than $3 million.
Many residents of the Washington Housing Authority and Section 8 are enrolled in the nonprofits programs. The Section 8 rental program is such that a tenant may convert his or her rental voucher to a homeownership voucher that (while on the Section 8 program) will pay toward the purchase of one’s own home for a set number of years.
As a whole, the nonprofit works closely with housing managers at the housing authority to identify residents who are ready to become self-sufficient.
Education is the core of the nonprofit, which encourages increased assets, sustainability and offers safe and affordable housing for low- to moderate-income families.
Washington Housing Nonprofit became a HUD Approved Housing Counseling Agency in 2010 and has assisted more than 1,800 clients with various housing needs.
The nonprofit has many local, state and federal partners including but not limited to the Washington Housing Authority, the City of Washington, USDA, N.C. Housing Finance Agency and HUD.
We rely heavily on funding from outside sources to maintain our programs, and thus have received grants from partnerships, such as Z Smith Reynolds, CDBG through the City of Washington, HUD Housing Counseling funds, N.C. Housing Finance Agency, Department of Labor and our local board of realtors.
Washington Housing Nonprofit has diligently worked toward becoming the name a person thinks of or a person refers to when housing needs arise.
A full-time certified housing counselor/real estate broker is waiting to assist residents with all housing needs.
