PANCHO AND LEFTY: Singer/guitarist Bob Daw will play a Willie Nelson tribute at the Beaufort County Traditional Music Association’s variety show Friday at Arts of the Pamlico’s Turnage Theatre in downtown Washington.

Singer and guitarist Bob Daw’s personal favorite Willie Nelson tune is “My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys.” But he has several other near-favorites, all of which can be heard Friday at the Beaufort County Traditional Music Association’s monthly variety show.

A self-taught musician and longtime member of BCTMA, Daw joins fellow musicians in Arts of the Pamlico’s Turnage Theatre gallery for a performance featuring Dwayne Harris and Reid Courson and the Flatland Zingers. They’re all BCTMA members who have, over the organization’s life, jammed with one another on many Thursdays and Saturdays, over time spinning off into bands, duos and solo acts. Daw regards his own musical evolution as an outcome of being a part of those like-minded musicians who get together often to not only be heard, but to listen, as well.

Whether he’s providing acoustic guitar to an old-time song or singing classics by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Daw said getting onstage, playing for music lovers and inspiring others to play is the mission.

“You want to put music in as many ears as you can — that’s what the BCTMA is all about. We just want to give everyone a chance to get out of the house and enjoy some music,” Daw said. “It’s all about sharing the music. It’s fun.”

Friday, Daw will be sharing the music of Willie Nelson with a tribute to the 82-year-old musician, actor, poet and activist known for such hits as “Always on my Mind,” “Crazy” and “On the Road Again,” as well as many others. Daw has been a Nelson fan for decades, he said.

“Well, in my younger days and he was officially with Waylon Jennings and part of the outlaw movement they did — that was my thing. That just caught my spirit. … People have told me that I sound like him and on these songs, I think I hit him pretty close,” Daw laughed.

The show begins at 7 p.m. at the Turnage Theatre, 150 W. Main St., Washington, and is free to the public. Donations to the BCTMA are appreciated.
