The North Carolina Press Association announced the winners of its annual news, editorial and photojournalism awards Thursday at a reception at the Hill Alumni Center at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Entries from the Washington Daily News placed in six categories in Division D, daily newspapers with a circulation under 12,500.

  • Feature Section Design, second place, for two features from Pamlico Life: coverage of Terrance Copper’s Pros Weekend on June 21, 2015, and a historical piece on Bath’s Van Der Veer house and its restored smokehouse.
  • Special Section, second place, for the Back To School 2015 special section.
  • Photo Page, second place, for the “Super Saturday” photo page featuring the Community Youth Football League championships.
  • Newspaper Appearance and Design, third place, for the March 5-6, 2015 editions of the Washington Daily News.
  • News Section Design, third place, for the Aug. 20-21, 2015 editions of the Washington Daily News.
  • Best Niche Publication, second and third places, for editions of Washington the Magazine. The July/August transportation-themed “Ways to Go” edition took second place, while “The Great Outdoors,” about Beaufort County’s outdoor experience, won third place.

Daily News publisher Ashley Vansant credited the newsroom staff for the effort that went into the award winners, as well as “other quality work produced last year.”

“I look forward to celebrating some big wins next year. With the talent in our newsroom, we are primed for an even stronger finish,” Vansant said.
