William G. O’Neal Jr.
July 6, 1933 – Feb. 29, 2016

William Graham O’Neal Jr., age 82, a resident of 126 Shoreline Drive, Belhaven, died Monday, February 29, 2016 at his home.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Wilkinson Church of Christ and will be officiated by Robert Spruill.

Mr. O’Neal was born in Hyde County, NC, on July 6, 1933 to the late William Graham O’Neal and Ina Mildred Sawyer. On January 12, 1957 he married Gracie Allen Carawan. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Mr. O’Neal worked as a welding supervisor at Newport News Shipbuilding for many years. He helped build the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier there. Mr. O’Neal enjoyed coaching sports, such as little league baseball and basketball, which many still know Mr. O’Neal as “Coach.” He was a golfer and waterman. Once he retired he was able to spend his time with his first love, working on the water.

Survivors include his wife, Gracie C. O’Neal, a son, A. Wes O’Neal of Poquoson, VA, a daughter-in-love Christy Fillyaw and husband Larry of Elizabeth City, NC, two brothers, Bobby O’Neal and wife Ann of Washington, Mitchell O’Neal of Hollywood, FL, two sisters, Joyce Carawan of Scranton, NC, Diane Ahearn and husband Mike of Belhaven, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Garland O’Neal.

The family will receive friends following the service at Wilkinson Church of Christ.
