Mr. Hilton Chester Bowen, Jr., age 90, a resident of Washington, died Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Greendale Forest Nursing and Rehabilitation in Snow Hill.

A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2016 in the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington.

Mr. Bowen was born in Beaufort County on Sept. 30, 1925, to the late Hilton Chester Bowen, Sr. and Thelma Latham Bowen. He was a graduate of Bath High School. Mr. Bowen was a Staff Sargent in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in Africa and Europe during World War II. He received several accommodations, the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Service Medal, Air Medal GO #5132 and one Overseas bar medal. He worked as an Administrative Officer at the Reserve Fleet at the James River. Mr. Bowen retired from the Fleet in Newport News, Virginia, and returned home to the White Post community. He was a treasure collector, he enjoyed working on cars and he had a deep love for animals.

Survivors include a daughter Becky Smith and husband Ed of Chocowinity, three grandchildren, Gary Chrismon and his wife Sandy of Washington, Michael Anthony Meekins of Chocowinity, William H. Chrismon and wife Lori of Washington, six great-grandchildren, Macon Deans, Anthony Burton, Brian Deans, Brittany Chrismon, Kelly Chrismon, Mackenzie Chrismon, three great-great-grandchildren Kaylee Deans, Emma Deans, Liam Burton, and two sisters, Rachel Cain of Beckley, WV, and Rhoda Sullivan of Washington.

He is preceded in death by his wife Mazel Bowen, a daughter Carolyn Marie Bowen Chrismon, a brother Ray Bowen, and a sister Adeline Cutler.
