EDENTON — The Washington Pam Pack suffered their second defeat in as many nights on Wednesday with a 6-5 loss at Edenton. The young Pack, starting five sophomores and four juniors defensively, spotted Edenton to a 5-0 lead through the first six innings before furiously rallying to tie the score with five runs in the top half of the seventh.

However, Edenton scored the winning run in the bottom half of the seventh inning on a single, a hit batsman, and a throwing error. It was the second tough loss in a row where the Pack spotted an opponent a sizable lead only to come back late in the game. The Pack is young and will learn from these tough losses as the non-conference portion of their schedule moves forward.

Washington started junior Tripp Barfield on the hill. Barfield surrendered two runs in the first inning on two walks, one hit and one error. Edenton scored an unearned run in the second on a throwing error and two hits. Barfield settled down facing only 11 batters in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.

After giving up a single to start the sixth inning, Barfield was pulled for sophomore Tyler Harrell. Edenton scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth from Barfield’s base hit, two bunts — one of which was a fielder’s choice — and a ground out to short.

With runners on first and second, Harrell induced a pop fly to left field to end the inning.

For the game, Barfield walked three, allowed five hits, and struck out five Edenton hitters in five innings. Harrell gave up one walk and one hit, and junior Logan Little was the tough-luck losing pitcher. Defensively, the Pack committed three errors. All three factored into Edenton runs.

Offensively, Edenton’s starter, lefty Matt Benfield, was strong for the six innings he pitched. The Pack went 1-2-3 in the first, third and fourth innings. The Pack threatened in the second when Neill Jennings hit a towering shot to the base of the left field fence, resulting in a double, and Little followed with a single.

The threat was thwarted, however, when Benfield struck out Barfield, Cooper Anderson, and Harrell successively.

The Pack’s epic seventh inning comeback started with another Little single. After a Barfield strike out, Anderson was hit by a pitch, Tyler Harrell singled, driving in Little with the Pack’s first run, and junior pinch hitter Riley Davis walked to load the bases. Junior Matt Black struck out for the second out, but junior Cody Godly delivered with a double over the right fielder’s head, which plated three Pack runs making the score 5-4.

Sophomore Fredrick Holscher singled to move Godly, now the tying run, to third. On the third pitch to Jennings, Holscher took off for second base, drawing a throw from the Edenton catcher.

This allowed Godly to charge home with the tying run just ahead of the return throw home. Holscher ended up on second, but Jennings grounded out sharply to short to end the threat. Offensively, Little led the Pack with two hits.

The Pack’s record now stands at 4-3 with non-conference games slated for Friday at South Creek and Saturday afternoon at Ayden-Grifton.
