BELHAVEN — A small establishment settled along Pamlico Street in Belhaven, Georgie’s Sport and Oyster Bar is a homegrown place for good food, good fellowship and good times.

Opened about nine years ago by George and Laura Baker, the restaurant is only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, but those few hours pack quite a punch.

George (or Georgie as he is known) Baker said his family has a long history of working in seafood and restaurants, starting with his grandfather in the 1910s and on to his own Baker Crab Co., for crabmeat processing, up until 1999.

Baker is no stranger to the world of business, and almost as if paying homage to his roots, Georgie’s now stands across the street from where his grandfather’s old business used to be.

“It was just something I thought I’d try. So far so good,” Baker said.

Although the sport and oyster bar started out selling only seafood — local seafood straight from the Pamlico Sound — the menu has now grown to include steak, chicken and salads, to name just a few additions.

For Baker, it’s all about serving his customers, listening to their requests and making them feel at home.

“We’re just a little mom and pop deal,” he said. “We just enjoy the people side of it. … We’ve got a really loyal customer base.”

The Bakers look forward to seeing their regulars, even to the point of worrying if one doesn’t show up for a couple of weeks. In the small town of Belhaven, everyone knows one another. That’s the atmosphere of Georgie’s, too.

“We family oriented, family friendly,” Baker said. “I consider the place comfortable.”

As for the future, he said there are no plans to expand, although some nights he wishes there was more room. The restaurant will also stay on its schedule of three nights a week, as Baker said there are just too many restaurants serving Belhaven now to garner a substantial profit on other nights.

But with Baker’s own family in the mix, and by making others feel at home, Baker said he hopes to have many more successful years to come.

“You can find about anything you want to eat in Belhaven,” he said. “We haven’t had anybody doing what we’re doing yet.”
