CORKI LEVERETT BOATING WEATHER: Belhaven residents celebrated the spring season with “Burning of the Socks” on April 23. The event included vendors, crafts, music and free dockage during the evening. “Burning of the Socks” refers to the start of the warm-weather boating season, in which boaters shed their winter socks to cruise along the Pungo River. All in good fun, residents brought socks to burn as a way to promote the town as a waterfront destination. Despite the storms cutting the event short, resident Corki Leverett said it was still a success. “The marinas were full of boats, and the boaters reported that they felt welcomed,” she said. “We greeted them with brimming goody bags, free boat inspections and boat blessings, if desired. Live music had begun prior to the storm, and the special song written for the occasion, ‘Burning of the Socks,’ was a big hit.”
