PREGAME: A crowd of Cypress Landing residents, veterans and active duty military personnel from across eastern North Carolina gathered at the Cypress Landing clubhouse before the Military Appreciation Day tournament Saturday.
Under a beautiful May sky, veterans and active duty servicemen hit the golf course Saturday for Cypress Landing’s eighth annual Military Appreciation Day. Drawing service members from Ft. Bragg Army base, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Coast Guard Base Support Unit Elizabeth City and Marine Corps base Camp Lejeune, the day of golf is a gesture of appreciation for the military, complete with food and beverages, which also featured a chance to win either a car or a jet ski with a hole in one at two designated holes. Cypress Landing Golf Professional Jeremy Shadle said this year’s Military Appreciation Day was the best yet, in terms of both turnout of service members and donations received from local businesses and individuals. All proceeds raised are donated to the Fisher House at Camp Lejeune, a “home away from home” for the family of service members in times of medical crisis.
MEETING OF THE MINDS: Paul Coakley, U.S. Navy Master Chief¬–Retired, speaks with visiting active duty servicemen just before they set off to the course.
FEELING APPRECIATED: Servicemen show off their new Cypress Landing Golf Club baseball hats, a perk of the Military Appreciation Day tournament.
WELCOME: Carole Lawler, on behalf of the Cypress Landing Board of Governors, welcomed participants in the eighth-annual Military Appreciation Day.
BUGLE CALL: The Military Appreciation Day tournament kicked off at 10 a.m. with a bugle call by Cypress Landing resident and trumpet player Les Sartorius.
STAR SPANGLED: Jim McPherson led the crowd in the “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America” before the opening shot was fired announcing the golf tournament’s start.
