Cash, firearms stolen in two home invasions

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information about two home invasions that occurred in the past week.

Sunday at about 4:45 a.m., 911 received a call reporting a home invasion on Possum Hill Road in Bath.

“The elderly couple was asleep and the subjects woke them up, went through the residence and took items,” said Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Charlie Rose.

Rose said cash and firearms were stolen from the residence. The homeowners were not injured during the home invasion, but it is unclear how long the suspects, and how many of them, searched the house.

“We don’t know how many suspects there were,” Rose said. “There was probably at least three, but there may be more.”

The crime bears a striking similarity to a recent one in the Old Ford area. At around 6 a.m. on May 9, another call came reporting a similar event at a residence on Gorham Acres Road.

“One person was inside the residence, but at least two suspects, with a possible third or more, were involved in that one,” Rose said.

Again, cash and firearms were stolen.

It is unknown whether these homeowners were specifically targeted, according to Rose.

“Right now, there’s nothing to believe that they were specifically, but until we know the method of operation, we always look into things like that,” Rose said.

The investigation into the crimes continues. Rose said residents should be alert to their surroundings, as always, and not hesitate to report suspicious incidents.

“Be mindful of normal traffic,” Rose said. “If you are to see a vehicle or people that you don’t recognize at times that would not be normal, then call law enforcement or the sheriff’s office, and let us check it out.

“Keep doors locked and items secure, and if there’s any reason that something doesn’t feel right, then call 911 immediately.”
